Xlina Dar’Karrow

She came to Portland to be nobody. It did not take.

Who is Xlina?

Xlina Dar’Karrow is the heroine of the Baku Trilogy. She is a Baku, and her blood eats nightmares. That is not a thing you get to opt out of.

She moved to Portland, Maine to get away from all of it. No druid father. No legacy. No nightmares to hunt. Six weeks later an arch demon knows her name, and there is a mark burning under her skin that will not wash off.

She did not ask for the job. She keeps doing it anyway. Her greatest strength is not the magic. It is hope, and she does not run out of it.

What is a Baku?

In Japanese folklore the baku is a spirit that devours bad dreams. People once called its name in the night to be rid of a nightmare.

In the Baku-verse it is not a bedtime story. Nightmares here are things, and they come through wherever the Mist thins. Most people have the good sense to hide from monsters. Xlina hits them.

The man who teaches her

The only one in the city who can teach her what she is comes with a body count. Oxivius Soulforgeis a thousand years old, and he eats the dead. He is not a comfortable teacher. He is the only one on offer.
